Challenging the Boundaries of Synchronized Swimming

August 24, 2012 by admin Leave a Comment

Olympium Synchro’s High Performance Camp is underway! The program has been designed to help athletes challenge the boundaries of synchronized swimming.  From exploring new ways to move to new ways to think, the camp will prepare the athlete to extend their creativity while getting a jump start on conditioning.   Limited space is available in week two!

Athletes spent a session each day with Rob, our favorite speed swimming coach and rotated through either figure skills or routine skills stations. There were many special highlights and memories from this past week.  On Monday, Ana Cukic led the athletes in water and on land in performance-focused choreography that tested their boundaries of what synchronized swimming means to them. Kerri Morgan worked with the athletes on improving mental skills. Afternoon land sessions included flex and ballet.

On Tuesday we welcomed Jessica Chase to the pool. Jessica led the athletes in routine skills development. She then spoke to them about her Olympic experience and showed her medal. The session ended with Jessica leading the athletes in a mini Olympics! After lunch Theresa Furlonge led a yoga session and Ana Cukic held a session on performance-based movement. The day ended with Laura McClemont’s flex and core session.

Wednesday at was fantastic! Highlights included Lisa Alexander leading stations in perfecting the pull down and better body boosts. Ana Cukic challenged the athletes creativity to create a fountain out of their bodies while explore the boundaries of the pool. Dryland included another  fantastic ballet class with the instructors from Gotta Dance.

On Thursday welcomed Jessica Chase back to the pool. Jessica built on the routine skills development foundation from Tuesday. Ana challenged the athletes to create statues rising and sinking in the water. The athletes explored using their bodies to create angle and levels in the water. Afternoon dryland featured Theresa Furlonge’s yoga session, Ana Cukic held a session on expression. The day ended with an intense flex workout.

Friday and the sun was shining again!  Amy Bush was on deck leading the athletes through routine skills and stations.  Ana Cukic challenged the swimmers to create fluid arms that expressed the theme of music.  After a land session with Ana, the athletes participated in a performance makeup training session with Tara Brawley (former National Team Member and professional make-up artist).  Wrapping up the makeup session, Tara applied traditional Chinese opera make up on Coach Laura!
